On the 23rd day of May 1916, S. N. Ewing of Hunt County, Texas applied for a pension authorized by the Act passed by the 33rd legislature of the State of Texas and approved April 7, 1913.
The form states “I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States ...That I was honorably discharged or surrendered ... was on detail duty when the war closed.”
From the questions asked and answered on the form, we can learn several facts about his time in Texas. He states that he had resided in Texas 60 years and he had resided in Hunt County for 59 years and his post office address was Celeste, Texas. He served for three years or more, from about March 1862 to the close of the war 1865. He was in the Calvary. The assessed value of his home was $740.00 and he had no other property. He indicates that he is not able to work and that he is feeble.
On May 31, 1916, The Adjutant General Office of the War Department, Washington, D.C. wrote to the Commissioner of Pensions, State of Texas, Austin, the following:
The records show that S. N. Ewing, private and corporal, Company H (Captain Marshall), 31st Texas Cavalry, C.S.A., enlisted May 10, 1862. On roll for January and February, 1864, last roll on file, he was reported absent without leave since November 15, 1863. No later record found. No record has found of a Colonel Guest or a Major Burns as of any Texas organization in the Confederate States Army.
On June 5, 1916, the Commissioner of Pensions wrote to S. N. Ewing, Celeste, Texas, stating:
Beg to state that I have rejected your application for a pension as the records at Washington, D. C. show you absent without leave, Jan. and Feb. 1864, however if you can state clearly the reason of same, I will be glad to reconsider.
On June 6, 1916, a letter was typed to the Hon. J. C. Jones Commissioner of Pension, Austin, Texas, on the letterhead of The First National Bank and signed by S. N. Ewing.
Dear Sir:-- Yours of the 5th Inst., to hand in which you notify me that my application for pension had been rejected, on account of absence without leave during Jan. & Feb. 1864, as per the records at Washington, yet stating that you would reconsider if I could satisfactorily explain this. In this regard I wish to state that our command having been dismounted in Arkansas, I, with others were ordered to bring the horses back home, and to report to General McCullough at Bonham. I reported to General McCullough at Bonham, and was assigned to Capt. Ferrall’s Co., and started with them to the Rio Grande country to active duty again. There were a number in this company that would steal from any one whether a Northern or a Southern sympathizer, and do so many unmanly, and unlawful acts, and seemingly with the consent of the Captain, that Lieutenant Hart finally asked all that did not endorse such actions, to go with him, and I, with quite a number of others did go with him on this account, but instead of deserting the army we went to Shreveport and there intended to join, or rather rejoin, my old command, but not finding them there, we returned and went into Ford’s Command, Gidding’s Regiment and in Capt. Robertson’s Company, in which I served to the end of the war. I trust that you will not class me as a deserter, because I did not want to stay with this bunch of Guerrilla’s and robbers, and I assure you that had I have had any inclination to desert, that I would not have gone back into the service, and remained to the end of the war. On the other hand, trying to live an upright and Christian life I felt that I could not afford to stay with this kind of company, and therefore, instead of deserting, I simply, with quite a number of others, changed commands, and stayed with them faithfully until the end. Again, I am informed that many are receiving pensions who did not serve only in the latter part of the war, and you will find that my record is clear in this particular, besides I had served all the first part as well, and I trust that you will not condemn me for trying to be a MAN, in war as well as in peace. So long as I have been able to support myself I have refrained from asking a pension, but now not being able to do so, and feeling that I did give faithful and honorable service to my State and County for nearly four years, I feel that you should reconsider my case, and in view of the facts here stated, that instead of placing me on the dishonorable roll, that you will place me on the honorable and manly roll, and that you can see your way clear to allow the pension as applied for. Trusting that you let me hear from you at once, and again assuring you that I do not want anything that is not justly due me, I beg to remain,
Very Truly Yours,
/s/ S. N. Ewing
His pension was allowed and was started as of June 1, 1916.
At the time Shadrack made application for a Pension, he was less than three weeks away from being 83 years old. Since he died in less than eight months from the time his pension was approved and he stated he was feeble, he must have gone to west Texas to live with some of his family since he died in Lockney.
Since Shadrack lived in Texas a year longer than he had lived in Hunt County, I would assume that he most likely lived in Fannin County when his first child was born and where his older brother, Alexander Bailey Ewing had lived since 1851.
On July 8, 1859, S. N. Ewing purchased 110 acres of land for $205.00 from John W. Marshall. The land is described as being on the waters of Indian Creek about 14 miles NW from Greenville being part of a survey of 509 acres of land surveyed in the name of M. H. Wright by virtue of a decree of the District Court of Collin county and M. H. Wright deeded to one John W. Marshall on the 10th day of September 1857.
